Hello for the last time!
This has been a crazy three month journey, and we hope you have enjoyed reading all about our progress with the song. We struggled for a while in the beginning, but we really turned it around at the end. Even though we fought and bickered through most of it and had no idea what we were doing half of the time, we couldn't have done it alone. On our last genius hour Wednesday we have been singing through the song to work out any last minute problems and preparing for our final presentation. At the presentation we have decided that it would just be easier to perform the song since we have zero experience and luck with technology. That's it kids, signing off.... With love, Carly & Erika <3

Hey everybody!
As you know Wednesdays are our designated days to work on our Genius Hour Project and the day that we update our blog. We didn't have school today so we didn't have a chance to work on our project. We still need to decide how we're going to present our song to the class as well as actually record our song. Other than that, we are in a really good place with the song. Of course we want a few more run throughs to make sure we know what we're doing and that it sounds good, but overall I believe our song has been a success. Although there isn't anything to be done this week in class, we can always work on the song separately or meet up this weekend to work on it. So everything is good this week and we're really grateful that we had a great rehearsal last week because without it, we would most likely be panicking. One week left! Thanks for sticking with us! - Carly and Erika :) We did it! We made it all the way through the song WITH the correct harmony.
Carly brought her uke today and once she started playing the rest just clicked. We're still not sure how we will show this to the class. We will either record ourselves and play it for the class, that's the option we'd prefer. The other option would be to perform live in front of the class and that might not go very well. Still no luck on posting a video to Youtube, but things are finally looking up. Since we only have two weeks left of Genius Hour and haven't been able to write out the sheet music, so we have to scrap that idea. Our song is about a minute and a half long. Carly sings the verses and Erika comes in with a higher harmony on the chorus and during some of the last verse. We hope to be able to record our song and edit as needed as well as finish everything up in the final two weeks. Home stretch y'all! - Carly and Erika :)))) Hey guys, we are back again for another blog post. So this week we have still been trying to get that harmony down. That is our weakest point and we are really trying to overcome it.
Next week, or the next, we are going to try to record some of the song. We will try to post it to Youtube, but out last video we made wouldn't post. We tried several times and it keep failing so if anyone has any tips on posting Youtube videos please let us know! But other than that we are almost done with everything. We hope to be done by week 11 so on the last week we can just perfect our video and put the final touches on everything. We also have not decided if we are going to sing and play this in front of the class or if we are going to show you guys a video. I guess this depends on if we can get the video uploaded to Youtube. So sorry for a boring week but we are still just working on that harmony! Thanks for checking out this weeks blog Carly & Erika :) Hi everyone. It's Erika. I'm here to explain somethings and clear the air.
I CAN hold a harmony. Let's start there. I hold harmonies all the time. I'm a harmony holding machine. The only thing is that, if the harmony is being made us as we go... it's a lot tougher. If something we've come up with doesn't sound right, I'll drop out for the sake of our ears. To clarify I can hold a harmony it's just that sometimes I choose not to sing random notes that don't blend with the melody. To fix this confrontation we've decided that I'm going to sing the melody and Carly will do a lower harmony. Secondly, I do contribute to this project. I just don't play the ukulele and didn't happen to be there when Carly had her breakthrough. I come in on helping with the blog and and moral support as well as trying to write sheet music, which probably won't happen by the way, because none of our music writing programs have ukulele cords. Incase you were wondering, I'm the one who comes up with our witty blog titles. - Erika and Carly :0 Hey guys, it is Carly!! I just wanted to take this week to describe how my song writing process went. So, Erika and I met over spring break. She was coming over to my house to work for a little bit. Before she got there I just decided to start playing my uke because I haven´t in a while. I sit in my floor and start messing around with some chords. Literally the lyrics just start flowing out of me and I really do not know where my idea come from. I was looking outside and it was sunny and I was thinking about starting over and having fresh starts and then the lyrics just started coming out. I texted Erika and was like "The uke is being added back in and I may just written our song¨. So Erika gets to my house and I played the song for her and she loved it. We were both so excited that something was finally coming together!!! This week we worked on finding a harmony and things worked out not bad!! So hopefully we will continue to progress in our song!!
Thanks for reading this week!! Love -Carly & Erika :))))))))) Boom chicken soup y'all. Carly is amazing.
Things weren't looking good. I'll admit it.... they had us in the first half. Carly and Erika didn't meet up until the last day of spring break, Sunday night. We had had barely anything done, and what we did have, we didn't like. All of a sudden Erika gets a text from Carly saying "I was strumming on my uke and actually got a lot done". Erika walks in and WOW. Carly had understated. This girl had cord progressions, lyrics and basically the entire song. All that was left for us to do was find a harmony. Things are looking up for these two besties. We decided to add back in an instrument because it adds to the song, keeps us on key and we said that one of us would play an instrument in our initial pitch. Finally a good blog post! All because Carly finally decided to start pulling her weight on the song. NO that's not right, Erika has done nothing at all!! She can't even hold a harmony. So really it's looking like Carly is doing most of the song!! Your welcome bye bye. Here's that silly video of us from last week! Okay guys, we are so sorry I know you really wanted to see that video but I have bad news.....we waited a whole freaking hour for the video to upload and then we published it but it said the process could not go through so now we are wondering what happen. We are going to still try to mess around with it and maybe get it uploaded! So thank you for tuning in this week!! We hope to continue to succeed in our song writing abilities!! -Carly and Erika:))) When you read this weeks blog, please consider this profound epiphany Carly and Erika recently had...... Erika can't hold a harmony.
Ok, in her defense she tries really hard, and can hold her own in any other performance, but when you are writing and learning two separate voice parts at the same time, it can get a little confusing. This week we decided to video ourselves while we worked on our song. In the video you can see us looking up videos online about how to create a harmony. We will post the video next week and you can see for yourself how well that went. For the past two weeks we've strayed from writing lyrics and focused on finding a harmony that we could use in the song. However, this has seemed to derail us and has put us way behind schedule. Over spring break we're going to meet as much as we can (or for as long as we can stand each other) to switch gears and get back to writing lyrics. Once we have finished those we will come back to finding a harmony that fits well with our lyrics. If anyone has any tips, recommendations, or even words of encouragement please leave a comment, anything helps!! Yay genius hour! -Carly and Erika :) Hey guys!!!
Bad news this week peeps, we're struggling. Badly. At the end of last week we thought we were off to a great start, but when went back over it this week, we realized we weren't killing it like we thought we were. We ended up scrapping half of our lyrics and had a hard time figuring out our harmonies. On a more positive note...... actually, there is no positive side this week. Erika's voice is shot and sounds like Roz from Monsters Inc. and Carly is wiped out. We now realize that this was a little bit of an ambitious project for two girls who have never done anything even close to this. We're not going to give up and will continue to write and edit our song. Thanks for all the comments so far ( sarcasm because NO ONE has comment on our site yet.... really people? You're hurting our feelings). Yikes, hope for a more uplifting post next week. We probably should have done something easier like planting a garden or building a roller coaster. - Carly and Erika :(( This week Carly and Erika actually got something done!!! We worked on our lyrics and decided to make our song comical by using a major, or happy sounding key, with negative lyrics. Also, we decided that because neither of us are actually any good at playing an instrument, that we would perform the song a cappella. We have however started talking about which harmony part either of us can do successfully and how complicated of a harmony we can handle.
We recorded two small chunks of possible verses that we wrote today, but nothing has been set in stone. We could have a new idea next week and completely scrap this one. Thats part of the fun and most of the challenge. Coming up with new lyrics always keeps us laughing and engaged in the project. Next week we might be able to post a sound clip of the melody we've written. Hope everyone has an awesome day!!! - Carly and Erika :))) |
